Arctic Kayaks Overview
Photographed by Lt. Commander R. P. Roop, USN, Woodbury, N.J. about 1930s. Negatives deposited in the University Museum (UM), University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA.
This was a project of museum kayaks found in the USA and Canada by Lt Commander Roop in the 1940's. The museums in the United States were the Heye Foundation (now the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), the University of Pennsylvania museum in Philadelphia (UM), the American Museum of Natural History in New York (AMNH}, Harvard's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Cambridge (PMHU) and in Canada, the National Museum of Man (NMM)- (now the Canadian Museum of Civilization).
Many of these kayaks have been destroyed or given away. This is a cross-section of the arctic kayaks, but not a complete inventory of them.
The kayak are arranged from east (Aleut) to west (Greenland). The numbers penned in the margin of the photograph, e.g., '70500-12' were Roop's negative numbers. The numbers are appended with an 'A' or 'B' or even 'C'.
